Then join us for this participative workshop and learn how to better understand the Austrian dialect!
From our dialect coach Peter:
Welcoming and working with many expatriates and exchange students over the years, I often see the surprise of those arriving in Austria because they find out that the common spoken language in Austria is quite different to the Standard German usually taught in schools.
The real struggle for most non-natives who come to Austria is not so much the German language itself, but rather understanding the Austrian dialect which is simply all around and everywhere. This is especially true in Vienna, most certainly at universities where you have people coming from all parts of Austria! It is also difficult to learn since much of the dialect is shaped through cultural knowledge and upbringing.
In this workshop, I will invite you to get a basic understanding of the Austrian dialect, and to learn the unwritten rules that make the spoken German sound so Austrian. You will be able to incorporate typical expressions and characteristics whenever you speak. Of course, this workshop is interactive and participants will be encouraged to practice the dialect right away.
You will get out most of the workshop if you have at least a German level of A2. But also for native German speakers who do not speak dialect or native dialect speakers this workshop is very interesting as well since you will gain a deeper understanding about it.
